Farseer Synopsis part 1:
Fitz, a small boy at the time, is taken by his maternal grandfather to be put into the care of his father's family - the Farseers. Fitz's father Chivalry was King-in-Waiting at the time, but abdicated the throne in disgrace when he discovered that he had fathered a bastard. He and his wife Patience settled into obscurity at Withywoods, an estate far from Buckkeep.
Fitz is raised by the stablemaster Burrich, and by the mysterious Chade Fallstar, an assassin and spy who secretly lives within the walls of the castle. Fitz learns everything there is to know about the care of animals and about killing, sneaking and spying but has no maternal/feminine influences in his upbringing until Chivalry dies and Patience comes to Buckkeep to see to Fitz's education. She sees that he is trained in courtly ways and also ensures he is given training in the Skill.
Fitz possesses two magics - the skill (high telepathic magic practiced primarily by nobility) and the wit (low earth/beast magic that is frowned upon and punishable by death). He learns a bit about how to use the skill but Galen, the master training him, actually hinders Fitz's skill more than helps it. This is because he is secretly brother to Regal, Chivalry's half-brother who has ambitions for the crown. Both Regal and Galen hate Fitz and see him as a potential obstacle to power. Galen tries to kill Fitz by skill commanding him to kill himself, but Fitz is saved by his wit bond to a dog he's been keeping in his room with the help of the Fool.
Fitz's main loyalty is to King-in-Waiting Verity, who has been running himself into the ground by using skill magic to try to thwart the Red Ship Raiders harrying the coast of the Six Duchies. Because of this he has no time or energy to focus on court intrigues or winning the loyalty of the people.
Regal is sent to broker a marriage alliance with the Mountain Kingdom on Verity's behalf. Instead he forms a plot to ensure that both Fitz and Verity are killed and Regal can marry the mountain bride Kettricken instead and take control of the Six Duchies. He also secretly sees to it that his father the king - who he wrongly believes had his mother murdered - is kept drugged, senseless and wasting away via smokes and draughts.
Fitz is sent to the Mountain Kingdom as an assassin to murder Kettricken's brother, whose sympathies Regal claims are misaligned with the Six Duchies. Fitz discovers the plot and is able to thwart it, but not without first nearly being killed when Regal poisons him and has him beaten and left for dead.
Galen is killed in the process of trying to drain Verity's life force as part of the plot, but not before forming an evil skill coterie that is loyal only to Regal.
Fitz spends a great deal of time in the Mountain Kingdom recovering, and later returns to Buck. He becomes close friends with Verity's bride Kettricken and deepens his connection with the Fool, king Shrewd's jester. The Fool tells Fitz that he is the White Prophet sent to set the world on it's right path, and Fitz is his Catalyst, which really freaks Fitz out.
Fitz also spends time as a soldier fighting in the Red Ship wars, and as an assassin sent out to eliminate forged people wandering the region (the Red Ship raiders have somehow found a way to kidnap villagers and return them to their homes as selfish, soulless, murderous, covetous inhuman husks of their former selves. The only known way to cure them is through death).
He rescues Nighteyes, a wolf pup, from an evil man who captures and sells wild animals, and he and the pup develop a strong wit bond. Fitz keeps Nighteyes a secret but is able to spend time with him by sneaking out and hunting with him in the hills and forests around Buck.
Fitz also falls in love with Molly, a childhood friend he used to run around Buck with. He hides much of his true self from her but she finds out that he's a royal bastard when she comes to the castle seeking his aid after her family goes bankrupt. Patience takes Molly under her wing and gives Molly a job working in the castle.
Molly and Fitz come together in the castle and pursue a passionate sexual and romantic relationship. Fitz intends on marrying her but can't get the permission of the king. Molly becomes pregnant and leaves without telling Fitz she is pregnant.
Meanwhile the Red Ship raids are getting worse and Verity struggles to keep them at bay. The Fool takes it upon himself to research and learn as much as he can about the elderlings and helps plant the seeds in everyone's minds that perhaps they should seek the help of the elderlings. No one knows who or what they are, or where. The Fool uncovers some information that is helpful, as does Kettricken.
Verity decides to leave Buck to seek the elderlings. Before he does he forms a skill link with Fitz so that he can stay in touch with Fitz while he is gone. Because of Fitz's erratic skill ability it's an unreliable link. They are able to communicate from time to time, but it seems to fade with distance as verity travels.
Regal and his allies arrange for Verity's expedition to be attacked and by the time he gets anywhere close to finding the elderlings he is alone and badly drained of energy.
Back at Buckkeep Regal is taking more and more liberties. Regal's coterie begins to suspect Fitz of possessing the wit magic.
Kettricken is pregnant with Verity's baby and Regal tries to have her miscarry. Fitz, Burrich, Chade and the Fool form a plot to evacuate Kettricken and the King to the Mountain Kingdom, but the plot is discovered and King Shrewd is murdered by the coterie. Fitz sends his allies off with Burrich and Chade to execute the escape plan anyway.
Fitz runs through the castle and murders the two members of the coterie who killed the king. He is captured and imprisoned. Regal plans to put him to death. Burrich and Chade cook up a plan for Fitz to escape through death. They sneak poison to Fitz's cell and have him enter Nighteyes' body via the wit magic. Fitz's body dies and he lives on in the wolf.
Chade and Burrich exhume Fitz's body and use wit magic to bring Fitz back into it. Fitz is resurrected and spends many months in a cabin with Burrich recovering and trying to relearn human ways. His time in the wolf's body has made him wild and feral.
Regal pillages Buckkeep and heads inland to live there among his allies. Patience unofficially takes over Buckkeep and protecting the coast from the Red Ships.
Burrich, Chade and Fitz have a falling out, and Burrich leaves to go live with and help Molly. Fitz is still completely unaware she is pregnant. Fitz is left alone and decides his only wish is to travel inland where Regal has gone, and kill him. As he is leaving the cabin Fitz is attacked by forged. He manages to kill them but not before they've stolen most of his supplies and clothing. He runs off inland.
Burrich returns to the cabin many months later to discover a corpse wearing Fitz's clothing. He believes Fitz to be dead and mourns him. At this point everyone Fitz knows and loves believes him to be dead
